MMJ has an established, long-term strategic relationship with Canadian-based Parallax Ventures Inc. (“Parallax” or the “Company”) to manage all investments in the portfolio.

Parallax is a highly experienced portfolio management firm focused on the industries of tomorrow.  The Company specialises in providing intimate market knowledge in various sectors including cannabis, healthcare, digital currencies, eSports, battery tech and other environmentally sustainable investments.  Parallax is led by Michael Curtis and Mohan Nair who have combined, nearly 50 years’ experience in public and private capital markets globally.  The principals have significant experience in managing companies from start-up to commercial launch bolstered with multiple profitable exits through public offerings or M&A processes.  In addition, they have successfully managed a wide variety of restructuring and reorganisations of portfolio companies facing management, financial and commercialisation challenges.

MMJ’s s Investment Management Agreement (“IMA”) with Parallax offers numerous benefits to Shareholders, including:

  • enhancing access to new investment opportunities, including unlisted investments. Under the IMA, Parallax is required to give MMJ priority to invest in opportunities that meet our investment criteria;
  • adding material value to existing investments;
  • minimising MMJ’s fixed cost structure; and
  • securing a meaningful investment presence in MMJ’s key investment market – North America.

Michael resides in Toronto, Canada and is an experienced former investment banker and private equity executive. He has accumulated over 20 plus years of investment banking and management experience through London, New York, San Francisco and Toronto, while working for such firms as RBC Dominion Securities, Lehman Brothers and Canaccord Genuity focused on cannabis, healthcare and other growth industries.

He is an active cannabis sector executive with significant investor, management and Board experience, while acting as a founder of leading companies in the sector. Notable experience includes:

  • Co-Founder and Vice President of Corporate Finance of Dosecann (an investee company prior to its successful divestment by MMJ in 2018 to Auxley Cannabis Group Inc, formerly Cannabis Wheaton Income Corp for CAD38m)
  • Co-Founder and former Chief Operating Officer and Director of Embark Health Inc. (a current investee company of MMJ) recently sold to Bevcanna Enterprises Inc for up to CAD31m.
  • Co-Founder and Board member of J. Supply Co, a Canadian cannabis retail operator with 11 retail stores and an additional + 20 in various stages of commercialization (an MMJ investee company through share grant from Embark Health)
  • Co-Founder, Board member and Vice-President of Corporate development of ProteinQuest, an emerging market leader in protein-enhanced and functional foods (55% owned by Embark Health)
  • Co-Founder, Board member and Chief Executive Officer of 5DG Therapeutics focused in mushroom-enhanced functional foods and novel psychedelics pharmaceutical products
  • Managing Partner of Parallax Ventures Inc. (the Asset Manager of MMJ’s investments).

Michael has a Master of Business Administration, University of New Brunswick, Major: International Finance and a Bachelor of Sciences (Honours), McMaster University.

Mohan resides in Toronto, Canada and is a seasoned capital markets executive with over two decades of experience in various roles including portfolio management, institutional equity sales, and investment banking. The common theme throughout Mohan’s career is a desire to find, fund, and provide guidance to entrepreneurs leading high growth companies. He has raised over a billion dollars in growth equity financing for such companies in the technology, natural resources, and cannabis spaces among others. Currently he serves as a Co-Founder and Portfolio Manager for Parallax Ventures Inc. Outside of work, Mohan has a keen interest in geopolitics, history, ancient dna, and motorcycle racing.
